<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed such that a jam of a recording medium is removed without being through complex steps and the medium can be easily removed without being torn. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has image holding means for holding electrostatic latent images based on image information input from outside. The image forming apparatus includes: a conveying means for conveying the recording medium; an adsorbing means for electrostatically adsorbing the recording medium to the conveying means; a detecting means for detecting the conveyed state of the recording medium conveyed by the conveying means; a separating means for separating the conveying means and the image holding means; and a control means for controlling the separating means based on the abnormal conveyed state of the recording medium, detected by the detecting means. In the case where a jam occurs in the image forming apparatus 1, a developing unit 14 and a transfer belt unit 10 are separated using a slider.
