PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a focus detecting sensor for detecting an interval between two reference images being an interval between two images at the time of focusing in common in various cameras having the different optical path length of a secondary image formation system. SOLUTION: An AF sensor is constituted of horizontal line detection sensor trains 131a and 131b comprising nine sensor trains respectively and vertical line detection sensor trains 131c and 131d comprising five sensor trains respectively. When the AF sensor is mounted in the camera being a high-end machine having long optical path length, all the islands except the islands n1 and n25 of the horizontal line detection sensor trains 131a and 131b are used. When the AF sensor is mounted in the camera being a low-end machine having short optical path length, the islands existing at the center part n1, n2, n3, n7, n17, n25, n26, n27, n31, n41, n49, n50, n51, n54, n55, n63, n64, n72, n73, n74, n77, n78, n86 and n87 are used.
