PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an optical element with which the degradation in optical performance can be suppressed even in case of the occurrence of a change in environmental temperature; an optical element holding structure with which an internal change in refractive index is suppressed by suppressing the generation of internal stresses in the optical element even if the optical element is held in a lens barrel and a temperature change arises, and with which the deviation in the optical axis of the optical element can be prevented; and an optical element lens barrel, and also to provide an optical communication module using the optical element or the optical element holding structure. SOLUTION: The optical element 10 is equipped with an optical portion 11 having an optical function and stress relief portions 12, 13 which are located on the outer circumferential side of the optical portion and relieve the stresses generated at the time of the change in the environmental temperature.
