Ion exchange resins are produced by cross-linking a polymer of styrene and/or a styrene derivative by reacting with an aliphatic and/or aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichloride and/or disulphochloride and/or phosgene, excluding aromatic compounds in which the functional groups are in the ortho position, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and exchanger-active groups are introduced in known manner into the cross-linked polymer. The polymer may be polystyrene in pearl form. The polymer, cross-linking agents and catalyst may be dissolved in nitro-propane or the polymer may first be swollen in a mixture of benzine hydrocarbons and ethylene chloride. The catalyst may be aluminium or titanium chloride. The cross-linking agents may be the dichloride of malonic, succinic, adipic, sebacic, chlorofumaric, dichloromaleic or terephthalic acids or diphenyl - 4,41 - disulphochloride. The cross-linked polymer may be sulphonated or chloromethylated and then aminated to produce cation or anion exchange resins.
