A cross-flow heat exchanger comprises a core 12 having a number of adjacent passages which are formed as indicated in Fig. 2 by sandwiching corrugated elements 34 between upper and lower plates 30/36, 36/38 &c. to form alternately flow paths for high and low temperature fluid streams. Each flow path is provided with a tubular member such as 39 of rectangular cross-section extending parallel with the associated corrugations and bent at substantially 90 degrees at its ends. The tubular members 39, 41, 42, 44 are mounted in a superposed manner providing on the core of the heat exchanger continuous substantially rigid surfaces on which are mounted low temperature inlet and outlet headers (14, 16, Fig. 1, not shown), high temperature inlet and outlet headers (18, 20) and return headers (24, 22). The high temperature fluid entering header 18, Fig. 3, is conveyed partly through the tubular member 50 partly through the passages formed by the corrugations 52 and the remainder through the passage between the tubular member and the edge of the corrugated sheet. The low temperature fluid is discharged to header 16 partly through the tubular member (60, Fig. 4, not shown), partly through the corrugations (62) and the remainder through the passage between the tubular member and the corrugated area. |
