A water-soluble carboxyalkyl cellulose, comprising a pulp treated with an amount of carboxyalkylating agent sufficient to provide a carboxyalkylated pulp having a degree of carboxy substitution from 0.4 to 1.4 and treated with an amount of a crosslinking agent sufficient to maintain the carboxylalkyl cellulose soluble in water, wherein the pulp has a kappa value of from 1 to 65.</p> |
