Plastic melt from a barrel 11 is forced past the conical end of an axially adjustable valve 22 to enter a chamber 36 and then reverses its direction of flow in passing through a combined screen 37 and breaker plate 38 to enter a second chamber 39. Housing 12 is provided with band heater 19, thermocouples 17, 18 and a pressure line (44), Fig. 2 (not shown). Valve 22 is adjusted by rotation of wheel 31, its setting being gauged by a vernier scale 32, 33, see also Fig. 3 (not reproduced). Die head 14 communicates with chamber 39 and is provided with a band heater 43. A further breaker plate 15 is optional. Screen 37 and breaker plate 38 are easily removable on release of bolts 23 which secure housing 13 to housing 12.
