A pointing device e.g. for a computer has a rod 20 pivotally mounted on a housing 10, with an image sensor 40 on a detection portion 22 of the rod inside the housing 10. Coordinate signals are produced by comparing image variations. The housing has an upper shell 12A, and may have a bottom panel 13 with a picture or pattern formed on a flat (e.g. figs 1-3) or curved surface 15, or the shell may sit on a work surface (fig 11). A transmitter 30 of IR or visible light may be inside the housing 10, on the rod or housing (fig 2); beneath a transparent pedestal (15, fig 6); or the housing may be transparent (figs 9 and 11) or have apertures (17', fig 10) for ambient light. The sensor 40 may be a charged-coupled device (CCD), a contact image sensor (CIS), or a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS), and may have a condensing lens. The rod 20 may be mounted in a ball and socket, and may have limited movement (figs 7 and 8). |
