A cleansing and/or sterilizing apparatus for tools, especially knives used in abattoirs, cutting and salting plants etc comprising two compartments, one or more spray nozzles and a movable assembly alternately sealing one compartment for cleansing and opening the other. The compartments are fitted out for one or more tools to be cleaned with supports holding the knife vertical during cleaning. The movable assembly preferably contains the spray nozzles in its upper part and pointing downwards. The apparatus comprises means of detecting the change of position of the mobile assembly and initiating the cleansing in the closed compartment. The assembly moves about 90[deg] around a tube which serves as a conduit for the cleansing fluid. Independent claims are also included for (1) a set comprising the claimed apparatus and two knives, which may be identical or different; and (2) a means of cleansing and/or sterilization of knives used in abattoirs, cutting and salting plants in which one knife is in use while the other is being cleaned in one compartment and is then placed in the open compartment and the movable assembly moved to give access to the closed compartment.
