The wafer has a set of thorough holes which are filled with conductive carbon nanotubes (22, 23) that are oriented transversally to a surface of the wafer. An insulating layer is formed between the carbon nanotubes and walls of the holes. The nanotubes are of multiwalled type and surrounded with carbon nanotube strips (26, 27, 28, 29). The nanotubes are coated or impregnated with a catalyst e.g. platinum. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a fuel cell comprising a thin wafer (B) a method for manufacturing a fuel cell.
