A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (IV), or an ester or a salt thereof comprising 1) reacting a compound of formula (I), (wherein Rrepresents Calkyl, Rrepresents Calkyl and Rrepresents Calkyl) with a compound of formula XC=O (wherein each X independently represents a leaving group) to give a compound of formula (II), (wherein R, Rand Rare as hereinbefore defined); and 2) reacting said compound of formula (II) with a compound of formula (III), (wherein Rrepresents hydrogen or a protecting group) and a process for the preparation a compound of formula (I).
