<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect a pixel defect included in a picture signal. <P>SOLUTION: A defect detection circuit 12 compares the picture signal of a target pixel with the picture signal of peripheral pixels, detects a pixel defect candidate and stores the address information of the pixel defect candidate in a position memory circuit 13. A defect judgement circuit 14 repeats the judgement of the pixel defect on the basis of address information stored in the position memory circuit 13, decides the address information of the pixel defect from the continuity of the judgement result and registers it in a defect registration circuit 15.
