Each plant unit(1,2,3,4,5) of the extrusion line is electrically connected(7) to a control unit(6) in which parameters for different profiles are stored and transmitted to each plant unit. The control unit knows the running time and/or position of an imaginary point on a profile relative to the extrusion line length During a change in profile type a term identifying a profile type is input into the control unit and the latter sends instructions to each individual plant unit at the correct time so that each unit is automatically adjusted to suit the new product. Transmission of control commands occurs automatically after an identification term, e.g. a pipe number, has been input into the control unit(6). Input of the identifying term occurs during a continuous extrusion process. A calibration station(3) is set to the outer shape of the extruded profile. When a vacuum tank is incorporated in the extrusion line sealing areas and profile supports in the tank are set to match the outer shape of the profile. Parameters which can be adjusted in the cutting unit(5) include cut depth, speed of cutter head movement relative to pipe movement and bevel geometry. An independent claim is included for: a) a method for hauling-off extruded products using a caterpillar unit(4) which is electrically connected(7) to the control unit and on changing the profile type the caterpillar track spacing is altered to match the new profile; b) a method for profile calibration in which a calibration station is electrically connected to the control unit and during a profile change the calibrator is automatically altered changed so that it contacts the outer surface of the new profile; c) a control unit for an extrusion line with stored data relating to the running time and/or position of an imaginary point on a profile to be produced relative to the extrusion line length and transmits instructions to each individual plant unit(1,2,3,4,5) at the correct time to alter the operating parameters of each unit during production. |
