PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus and a preliminary delivery controlling method capable of sufficiently drawing out delivery restoring effects of respective nozzles and suppressing unnecessary discharging of ink accompanied with preliminary delivery as much as possible. SOLUTION: The number of the next preliminary delivery during recording operation is set on every nozzle in accordance with the delivery downtime for an individual nozzle. As it is possible thereby to practice the preliminary delivery in use by an appropriate number to the individual nozzle even when a deviation on delivery frequency among a plurality of the nozzles during recording, it becomes possible to keep a stable delivering condition of a recording head under a condition that consumption of the ink is decreased as much as possible.
