A unified media collection system (10) comprises a local user agent (30) with a primary metadata repository (12), and at least one foreign user agent (16) with a secondary metadata repository (20). The secondary metadata repository (20) is operatively coupled to the primary metadata repository (12). The local user agent (30) is configured to compare the primary and secondary metadata repositories (12), (20) to identify missing media content available for purchase. The local user agent (30) is also configured to purchase the identified missing media content to complete at least one media collection. The local user agent (30) is adapted to deselect items from a list of identified missing media content for purchase, as needed. The local user agent (30) is further configured to compare and keep the primary and secondary metadata repositories (12), (20) synchronized and up-to-date.
