PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-dimensional periodic structure in which a defect is introduced without disturbing the regularity of the periodic structure and a defective volume is controlled. SOLUTION: The three-dimensional periodic structure into which spherical thin layer particles constituted of a first material 1 are regularly arrayed in three-dimensions is characterized in that second materials 2-1, 2-2 different from the first material fills arbitrary spherical thin layer particles, and thus, even in the three-dimensional periodic structure in which the defect is introduced, its entire structure is not broken or disturbed. Also, since the second material is constituted of at least two or more different materials 2-1, 2-2, the effective refractive index of the second material part seen from the whole three-dimensional periodic structure can be freely controlled, and it becomes possible to effectively change/control the defective volume of the introduced defects.
