PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To materialize reduction of vehicle vibration and reduction of starting time at a time of engine start. SOLUTION: Cranking by a starter is started under a condition where actual intake valve timing is delayed by a variable intake valve timing device to reduce actual compression ratio beforehand to a level with which vehicle vibration at a time of cranking can be reduced at a time of engine start, and engine combustion (ignition) is started when engine rotation speed reaches rotation speed capable of suppressing vehicle vibration at a time of first explosion to predetermined level or less by cranking. Actual valve timing is gradually advanced to gradually raise actual compression ratio according to cranking continuous time (or engine rotation speed) during cranking to raise actual compression ratio to the ratio at which the engine can rotate by itself by combustion pressure with corresponding to combustion start timing.
