PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a new texture that can improve a degree of orientation of a recording layer, to provide a manufacturing method thereof, to provide a magnetic storage apparatus, to provide a substrate for the magnetic recording medium and to provide a texture forming apparatus for forming the texture on the surface of the substrate. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has the substrate 11 having the texture 11a formed on the surface thereof and further has a seed layer 12, an underlayer 13, a non-magnetic intermediate layer 14, a first magnetic layer 15, a non-magnetic bonding layer 16, a second magnetic layer 17, a protective layer 19 and a lubricant layer 20 which are sequentially formed on the substrate 11. The texture 11a has a large number of grooves formed in a self-organizing way by irradiating the surface of the substrate 11 with an ion beam from an oblique direction. The texture 11a consists of the large number of grooves extending along a recording direction and the grooves are formed at a prescribed interval in the direction orthogonal to the recording direction.
