PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device of simple and proper structure capable of reducing the torque to be required to idly rotate a sheave when testing emergency stop to restrict increase of dimension of a motor for a hoisting machine and increase of inverter capacity, and to provide an emergency stop testing method. SOLUTION: The elevator device is provided with a fixture 8a detachably provided in a balance weight housing frame 6 for housing a balance weight 3. A fitting means structured of holes 14 for the fixture to fit the fixture 8a, which jacks up the balance weight housing frame 6 with a jack device 9 to move it upward when testing emergency stop, to a balance weight guide rail 7, which is arranged in the hoistway, is provided in the balance weight guide rail.
