<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption of a color image forming apparatus and to extend the service life of an image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes contact separation parts 4 for selectively bringing an intermediate transfer belt 5 and one of photoreceptor drums 1 into contact with each other and separating them. The photoreceptor drum 1 corresponding to a color to be used and the intermediate transfer belt 5 are brought into contact with each other, and the photoreceptor drums 1 corresponding to colors not to be used and the intermediate transfer belt 5 are separated. Specifically, a corresponding push-up member 4a is turned left around a support shaft 4b such that a corresponding first transfer section 3 is lifted to bring a corresponding transfer part of the peripheral face of the intermediate transfer belt 5 into contact with the peripheral face of the corresponding photoreceptor drum 1.
