PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus to/from which a unit structure containing one-side originals or a unit structure containing double-side originals is simply attached/detached, and which effectively switches the rotating direction of a reversible motor shared in common with a reading apparatus main body and an original reversing unit. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: the apparatus main body 1a for reading one-side originals; the original reversing unit 1b freely attachable/detachable to/from the main body and including an original reversing means; and a motor shared with the main body 1a and the unit 1b. Switching of forwarding/reversing of the motor is carried out before a tip of the original reaches an original tip detection means 29 provided to a carrying path wherein the front/rear side of the original is switched so that the image reading apparatus hardly causes variations in tip margin and tail end margin of the read image.
