PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of the difficulties in achieving high transfer efficiency and low retransfer rate and difficulty in prevention of scattering of an image edge, when many colors are transferred superimposed in a transfer member provided with a bias-applying means which is longitudinally uniform. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a transfer member, carrying out multiplex transferring of toner images on photoreceptors to an intermediate transfer body. The transfer member is provided with a transfer electrode which is divided into more than two parts in the main scanning direction, a control means varied, according to image signals is provided for bias applied to each transfer electrode and the bias applied to each transfer electrode is controlled, based on the image signals of the toner image already formed the intermediate transfer body, as well as, the image signals of the transferred toner image from the image carrier.
