An organic electroluminescent device including at least one organic layer between a pair of electrodes, wherein the at least one organic layer includes a luminescent layer, at least one layer of the at least one organic layer includes at least one metal complex containing a tri- or higher-dentate ligand, and a compound represented by formula (I) is contained in an organic layer containing the metal complex and/or in other organic layer(s). In formula (I), R¹¹ to R¹⁴ each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent group, and at least one of R¹¹ to R¹⁴ represents an aryl or heteroaryl group.
