A topping-up device for an electric battery comprises (a) a partition dividing the space in the battery contained above a particular level into two compartments, one of which is vented whilst the other is connected to a liquid supply chamber situated above it through an inlet passage which includes a liquid air-lock including a weir over which liquid flows so that when the liquid surface rises above the bottom of the partition it prevents further escape of gas from the air-locked compartment and builds up a pressure therein to prevent entry of further liquid through the inlet passage; and (b) means responsive to the liquid level in the supply chamber for preventing entry of further liquid into the chamber when the liquid reaches a predetermined level. The means controlling the liquid level in the supply chamber may be a float valve which surrounds the upper end of the inlet tube thereby forming the air-lock. The partition may be positioned so that the joints between the walls of the container and the lid and the terminal posts and the lid are in the vented compartment. Particular embodiments are shown in Figs. 1-5. In Fig. 5 tube 51 is a vent tube. |
