PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a recorder in which ink ejection state of a recording head can be detected accurately in a short time through a small and inexpensive arrangement. SOLUTION: The recorder comprises a means for detecting ejection state of ink from the ejection opening of a recording head wherein the ejection detecting means consists of a light emitting element and a light receiving element. A member for intercepting the direct light out in a light beam directed from the light emitting element toward the light receiving element is provided between the light emitting element and the light receiving element. In the light beam directed from the light emitting element toward the light receiving element, only the light reflected on the surface forming the ejection opening of the recording head or the vicinity thereof toward the light receiving element is used for detecting ejection state of ink immediately after ejection from the ejection opening of the recording head.
