PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an approximation method with which deterioration in performance is reduced while maintaining low complexity. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a receiver for correcting an error by applying an iterative decoding step in a communication system using a channel code for error correction, including a demodulator for receiving and demodulating an output signal of a channel, an iterative decoder and a sink for decoding the output signal of the demodulator iteratively several times, determining an LLR value used for iterative decoding and approximating a first equation of log(e<SP>a1</SP>+e<SP>a2</SP>+...+e<SP>aN</SP>) utilizing a primary largest element a<SB>max1</SB>and secondary largest element a<SB>max2</SB>among elements a1-aN.
