PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To translate an external address to the address of the memory space of a processor. SOLUTION: A first portion of the external address is used as a pointer to select one of a plurality of entries in a segment table, each entry of the segment table representing a different segment of a memory. At least a portion of the selected entry is used as a reference to one or more of a plurality of entries in a page table. Each entry in the page table includes at least a portion of a physical address in the memory and belongs to a group of entries representing a page in the selected segment. A second portion of the external address is used as a pointer to one of the entries in the page table to obtain at least a portion of the translated physical address corresponding to the external address.
