PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting the base density of a film, by which the base density value can be almost accurately found out even when a gap between frames hardly exists or density is put between frames due to an influence of overscene. SOLUTION: The base density detecting method comprises: a film image input process for reading out one developed film by an imaging device and obtaining a pixel value in each of R, G and B color components; an unexposed area recognition process for detecting the edge of each frame image from the obtained pixel value and recognizing a pixel line located on the intermediate of an adjacent frame image edge as an unexposed area on the basis of the detected edge; and a base density detection process for calculating a plurality of base density values by applying a plurality of mutually different arithmetic processing processes to respective pixel values in the unexposed area recognized by the unexposed area recognition process and then adopting the largest value out of the plurality of calculated base density values as a real base density value.
