PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily manage articles without adding special devices. SOLUTION: A clerk of a book store, when a book is brought in for resale, reads codes such as ISBN and book JAN code previously attached to the book with a bar code reader and scanner 34, places a designated page on the scanner 34, and inputs a start command for collating unique book information to a computer activating a collation program. Herewith, a surface condition of a prescribed region of a prescribed page of the book is read out with predetermined resolution and gray scale to be transferred as image data to a computer 36 for storing. Next, the article management system, for checking if the book for resale was purchased following a normal procedure, captures the image data, unique book information, via a network 38 from a unique book information management server 40, and verifies for displaying whether the image data is the same or not by comparing with the previously stored unique book information image data.
