PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a plurality of image forming units, being capable of providing an image of stable density of an image forming unit which does not perform image formation and obtaining stable cleaning performance regardless of an image formation mode wherein the number of image forming colors is different. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus which is equipped with the plurality of image forming units P and can form an image without using all the image forming units, driving of a developing means 4 of an image forming unit which is not needed for image formation is stopped and a developer is supplied to a cleaning means 6 of the image forming unit which is not needed for the image formation from an image forming unit which performs the image formation through an intermediate transfer body 50.
