<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antimicrobial composition obtained by using a plant as a raw material, highly safe to human beings, and having excellent antimicrobial activities; to provide a preservative and a method of pasteurization and inhibition of the proliferation of microorganisms by using the antimicrobial composition; and to provide a food, a cosmetic and a medicine with excellent preservability, using the antimicrobial composition. <P>SOLUTION: The antimicrobial composition uses Crepidiastrum lanceolatum Nakai as a raw material for the antimicrobial composition. Preferably, at least one kind of the leaf part, the stem part and the root part of the Crepidiastrum lanceolatum Nakai is used as the raw material. More preferably at least one kind of extracts of the leaf part, the stem part and the root part of the Crepidiastrum lanceolatum Nakai is used as the raw material. The antimicrobial composition is used as the preservative for the food, the cosmetic or the medicine.
