PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology of optimizing a sampling position of an output signal from a solid-state imaging element when the solid-state imaging element reads image information.

SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: the solid-state imaging element 10 for converting an optical signal of image information into an electric signal; an analog signal processing section 11 for sampling and holding a signal level for a field-through period and an image signal period from an output signal of the solid-state imaging element 10 in the unit of pixels, and subtracts the signal level of the image signal period from the signal level sampled and held for the field-through period to obtain an image signal; a pulse generation section 14 for supplying sampling pulses used by the sampling and holding; and a control section 2 for controlling a sampling position of the output signal by the sampling pulse, and the control section 2 optimizes the sampling position on the basis of variation information of the output signal when the sampling position is changed.
