PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio communication system comprising mobile stations and base stations wherein the mobile station is shifted to a peripheral cell detection mode without decreasing the transmission efficiency and complicating the processing. SOLUTION: In the radio communication system including the mobile station MS and the base stations BS1, BS2, either or both of the mobile station MS and the base stations BS1, BS2 are provided with a means for informing about a frame position possible for packet transmission on the basis of detection of reception quality deterioration or the like, and the mobile station includes a means for discriminating a frame position without possibility for packet transmission on the basis of the information of the frame position possible for the packet transmission and shifting to the peripheral cell detection mode at the frame position.
