. A machine (1) effects a weld seam to a hose (2) of plastics foil. The seam is transverse to the direction (3) of hose travel, and is effected by two opposed heating surfaces (4) applied to the hose from opposite sides at given intervals. Just above the seam, a product-clamp (18) has two elements (20) on the ends of telescopic arms (56) which are applied in opposition to each other on either side of the hose (2). These prevent the product within the hose falling under its own weight to open the hot seam. The clamp elements remain applied until the seam has cooled, to the point where the seam can accept the load without bursting.
