<p>A recording medium driving device is provided with a pickup mechanism for applying light through an objective lens facing an optical disc (1); a pickup transfer mechanism for bringing the pickup mechanism close to and away from a turn table (23); and a substantially flat board shaped cover (21A) whereupon a window (21B) is cut along a transfer direction of the pickup mechanism. A disc ejecting mechanism (43) is permitted to freely move along the flat plane of the cover (21A) so that the disc ejecting mechanism overpasses the window (21B). The pickup mechanism is provided with an actuator for separating the disc ejecting mechanism (43) from an optical disc (1) at least during a period when the disc ejecting mechanism is moving. Therefore, when the disc ejecting mechanism (43) moves on an upper plane of the cover (21A) to overpass the window (21B), even when the disc ejecting mechanism erroneously enters the window (21B), the objective lens does not interfere with the disc ejecting mechanism (43).</p>
