NOVEL CHONDROITIN SULFATE FRACTION

Disclosed is a fraction of CS or a salt thereof, the fraction having the following properties (1) to (3): (1) a weight average molecular weight of 5,000 to 20,000 as measured by gel filtration chromatography; (2) sulfur content of 6.5 to 8%; and (3) protein content of 0.1% or lower as measured by Lowry method. Also disclosed is a process for preparing the fraction comprising at least the following steps (1) and (2): (1) contacting chondroitin sulfate or a salt thereof with a chondroitin sulfate lyase to give a fraction containing chondroitin sulfate or the salt thereof; and (2) removing impurities from the fraction.
