<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that enables a replacement unit to securely be replaced with a new one. <P>SOLUTION: The replacement unit CRU 12 which can freely be loaded in and unloaded from the image forming apparatus 10 has a status sheet 14 wound around a roller 16 inside when a new article (not used) and in initializing operation when the replacement unit is set in the image forming apparatus 10 and the power source is turned on, the status sheet 14 is conveyed along a conveyance surface 30. The conveyed status sheet 14 is discharged through a fixation part 20 and a paper discharge sensor 22. At this time, when the paper discharge sensor 22 detects the status sheet 14, the length of the status sheet 14 is read as information regarding the CRU 12.
