PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light receiving element easy to integrate and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The light receiving element 100 comprises a substrate 101; a first contact layer 112 formed above the substrate 101, an optical absorption layer 114 formed above the first contact layer 112, a second contact layer 116 formed above the optical absorption layer 114, and a condenser 170 formed above the second contact layer 116. At least one of the optical absorption layer 114 and the second contact layer 116 includes a photonic crystal region 140 having a periodic refractive index distribution in a surface direction, and the photonic crystal region 140 includes a defect region 142.
