A method of treating a permeable membrane comprising the steps of: (a) providing a permeable membrane comprising a copolymer having (n) repeating units of general formula (I) wherein R₁ and R₂ are aromatic hydrocarbon moieties, and R₃ is an optional moiety and is selected from the group consisting of alkyls and aromatic hydrocarbons; (b) heating said permeable membrane for a period of time to increase the selectivity of the permeable membrane relative to a membrane that has not undergone heating; and (c) forming a permeable sealant layer one at least one side of said membrane.
