Method for controlling the setting down of a workpiece (1) in which compressed air is supplied via a nozzle (4) into a gap (3) between the workpiece and the support surface (2) that may be caused by foreign bodies. The pressure or pressure change in the supplied compressed air is measured and related to the gap width. If the pressure drop exceeds a preset reference pressure, the gap width is indicated as being too high. An independent claim is made for a device for controlling the setting down of a workpiece.
