A lubricant containing a minor amount of a polyalkene-substituted succinimid e of Mn 1800 to 2800, as a first base, is circulated through a lubricating system so that the succinimide forms salts with at least a portion of combustion acids therein. The lubricant is then contacted with an immobilise d second base, stronger than the first base, that displaces at least a portion of the succinimide from the salts to form retained second base:combustion ac id salts and release the succinimide into the lubricant.
