A viscometer-densimeter for a tool to be used in a well bore in a fluid containing formation comprises a sensor unit (62), at least one magnet (64), at least two spatially disposed connectors (72) with a tensioned wire (74) suspended between such that the wire may interact with a formation fluid directed into the sensor channel (78). The connectors and wire are supplied with a drive voltage to provide a frequency oscillator such that the wire vibrates at a resonance frequency which varies with the density/viscosity of the formation fluid being sampled. The magnetic field induces an emf in the wire which is processed as a function of frequency by the circuit (68) to yield the fluid properties.
