Alumina-silica fibres are prepared by dissolving aluminium metal in an aqueous solution of aluminium chloride, adding ethyl or methyl alcohol, or acetic acid, a silicon compound selected from colloidal silica and silicic acid and an acid oxide material selected from boric oxide, phosphorus pentoxide, titania and mixtures thereof, concentrating the solution to a viscosity of 1-1000 poises, fiberizing the concentrated solution, drying the fibres and calcining at 1200-2500 DEG F. to produce fibres having the composition 68-80%, Al2O3, 14-30% SiO2 and 1-10% acid oxide.
