Fluorine containing copolymers

A polymer prepared by polymerizing together at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers, one of which is an hydroxy alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and the other is a fluorocarbon acrylate, methacrylate or a -chloroacrylate, the polymer having a carbon to carbon main chain, and containing perfluorocarbon groups of 4 to 18 carbon atoms and recurring hydroxyl groups, the hydroxyl groups being separated by at least two carbon atoms from hetero atoms, at least 20% of the weight of the polymer being contributed by fluorine atoms and at least 0.05% by hydroxyl radicals. The copolymers are prepared using conventional techniques. Exemplified monomers are those of the formulae C7F15CH2O.CO.C.(CH3) = CH2, C8F17SO2N.(CH3).C11.H22.O.CO.C = CH2, C8 F17SO2N.(CH3).C10H20O.CO.CH = CH2, C8F17 SO2N(CH3)C11H22.O.CO.C(CH3) = CH2, C7F15.C2 H4.O.CO.C(CH3) = CH2, and hydroxypropyl-methacrylate, hydroxyl propyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Example 8 includes the reaction of the polymers with an isocyanate.ALSO:The compound C7F15C2H4O.CO.C(CH3)=CH2 is prepared by the following reaction sequence: (i) 1-iodoperfluoroheptane is reacted with vinylacetate in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile to give C7F15CH2CH.I.O.CO.CH3, (ii) the product of (i) is reacted with LiAlH4 and, after purification steps, the product C7/F15/CH2CH2OH obtained, (iii) the product of (ii) is reacted with methacrylic acid in the presence of concentrated H2SO4 to yield C7F15C2H4.O.CO.C(CH3) = CH2.ALSO:Fabrics such as cotton, polyesters, nylon, rayon and wool are treated with an aqueous emulsion or a solution of certain copolymers by padding the emulsion on to the fabric, followed by curing with heat. The copolymers are those obtained by copolymerising a fluorocarbon acrylate, methacrylate or a -chloroacrylate and an hydroxy acrylate or methacrylate. Other components of the emulsions or solutions exemplified are triazine-formaldehyde resin, magnesium chloride, glycolic acid, 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, hexamethyloxymethylmelamine resin, p-toluene sulphonic acid, isopropanol, and benzotrifluoride. In one Example, the copolymer is treated with an isocyanate prior to application to fabrics.
