The method involves downloading a new application code with control and location information, and storing the code in a memory of an energy meter. Verification of presence of the control information in the memory is controlled by a microcontroller. The energy meter is permitted to remain in a limited operating mode for allowing new downloading in case of absence of the control information in the memory. An independent claim is also included for an energy meter.
