A variable compression ratio internal combustion engine whose compression ratio is varied by varying the volume of a combustion chamber, where disorder of an air-fuel ratio involved by the variation in the compression chamber volume can be suppressed. In a transition period of variation in a compression ratio, an actual compression chamber volume realized by a variable compression ratio mechanism is detected, and factors (such as fuel injection amount, cylinder suction air amount, and EGR amount) governing an air-fuel ratio are controlled based on the actual combustion chamber volume detected. As a result, air-fuel ratios before and after the variation of the compression ratio are made substantially the same.
|
