PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a recording and reproducing apparatus of a disk cartridge thin in its whole size even when a camera unit is further added to the recording and reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with: a base unit 32 on which a disk rotation drive mechanism 41 for rotating an optical disk 2 and an optical pickup43 provided near this disk rotation drive mechanism 41 and moved in the radial direction of the optical disk 2 are arranged; and an image pickup unit 57 arranged on the base unit 32 so as to be positioned at an opposite side to the optical pickup 43 for holding the disk rotation drive mechanism 41 between them.
