PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the forming material of a liquid crystal alignment layer with which a liquid crystal alignment layer can be formed on a transparent electrode substrate by a transfer method, and to provide a method for forming a liquid crystal alignment layer on a transparent electrode substrate by using the above forming material of a liquid crystal alignment layer. SOLUTION: The forming material 10 of a liquid crystal alignment layer comprises a release layer 2 having recesses and projections formed on its surface and a liquid crystal alignment layer 3 successively layered on a supporting body 1. The surface of the release layer 2 has groove-like recesses and projections formed thereon, for example, having≤10μm groove width,≤0.5μm groove depth and≤200μm spacing of the grooves. After the liquid crystal alignment layer 3 of the forming material 10 of the liquid crystal alignment layer is laminated on a transparent electrode substrate 20 under heating and pressurizing conditions, the supporting body 1 with the release layer 2 is stripped from the transparent electrode substrate 20 to transfer the liquid crystal alignment layer 3 having a pattern of surface projections and recesses got out of the release layer 2 onto the transparent electrode substrate 20; and if necessary, the transparent electrode substrate 20 is calcined to form a liquid crystal alignment layer on the transparent electrode substrate 20.
