PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To bring out fuel consumption reduction effect due to improvement of thermal efficiency at maximum by eliminating deterioration of combustion nature in light load zone due to drop of intake air charging efficiency by utilization of exhaust gas swirl in an intake exhaust control device A for an engine controlling an intake valve 8 to a late close side in a partial load zone for improving thermal efficiency. SOLUTION: Intake and exhaust valve timing is controlled to greatly delayed angle side when the engine is in the light load zone, high compression ratio cycle is materialized by late close of the intake valve 8 and late open of an exhaust valve 9, thermal efficiency is improved to reduce intake loss, and exhaust gas is sucked back in a cylinder 3 at a beginning of suction stroke by late open of the intake valve 8 and late close of the exhaust valve 9. Lift curves of two exhaust valves 9 for each cylinder 3 are made different to close one exhaust valve 9 later than another.
