PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology whereby an external telephone set can instruct a copying machine in a power-saving state to carry out returning processing in a standby state and also the external telephone set can instruct the copying machine conversely to go to the power-saving state from the standby state after the use of the copying machine so as to enhance the convenience of a user. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus including: a communication means for connecting a line to the external telephone set; a power-saving state shift means for shifting to the power-saving state with low power consumption; and a power-saving returning means for restoring from the power-saving state to the standby state being an operable state, is characterized by including: a state discrimination means for discriminating whether the state of the image processing apparatus is the power-saving state or the standby state; a call register storage means for storing a call from the external telephone set internally as the call register; and a returning processing discrimination means for discriminating whether or not the returning processing from the power-saving state to the standby state is to be executed in response to the result of the state discrimination means.
